Prof Guy Poppy CB, FMedSci
Professor Guy Poppy served as the FSA’s Chief Scientific Adviser from 2014 to 2020. He was appointed Companion of the Order of Bath (CB) in the late Queen’s Birthday Honours 2021 for services to food security and food safety. He was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2022. With significant research experience in food systems, Guy has advised governments around the world and has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers including highly cited articles on risk assessment and risk communication. Guy is a graduate of Imperial College and Oxford University and held posts at Rothamsted Research, up to 2001 (Principal Scientific Officer). As the FSA’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Guy provided expert scientific advice on food to the UK government and played a critical role in helping to understand how scientific developments will shape the work of the FSA as well as the strategic implications of any possible changes. His CSA reports have reached a wide audience with impact on issues ranging from AMR through to the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS). He has focused on connecting science to those using it and has pushed for scientists to be intelligent providers to intelligent customers of science. In 2019, Guy became the Programme Director for a £47.5 million interdisciplinary research programme transforming the UK food system. He was the Deputy Exec Chair for BBSRC (from 2022) and interim Exec Chair from August 2023- 24. Currently Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University of Bristol.

Dr Jenny Baverstock
An 40 year career in biomedical research related environments from her first role as a research dermatologist, through biomedical research (cellular signal transduction) in pharma and university sectors, research management in Research Council, University and NHS settings. Jenny joined the newly formed NIHR in 2006 (Clinical Research Network) working mainly on a large portfolio of research in primary care. Since 2014 Jenny has worked in the University of Southampton (performance systems including REF), training (clinical doctoral scheme) and academic research in food systems and air quality She has a specialist in knowledge exchange and public engagement. Jenny was, a Wave 1 UKRI Clean Air Champion (Strategic Priorities Fund £42.5 M), where she engaged with important stakeholders including charities as well as leading UK researchers and organisations. Jenny has worked with many of the UK’s (and world) leading scientists throughout her career. She was a Principal Enterprise Fellow (Associate Professor) before leaving in 2026 and is now an Honorary Fellow at the University of Bristol.
